About Us
Introducing your hosts
We are Brenda & Stewart McLean and have been involved in
farming all our married lives, initially dairying in the
King Country in the North Island and then in Southland and
Otago.
Stewart was a third generation dairy farmer, while Brenda
was a Secondary school teacher, specialising in social
sciences before going on to become a teacher of the deaf.
After moving to Southland we became involved in sheep and
beef farming. A big change from dairying.
Some years later, after down sizing to a smaller farm near
Milton, in Otago, we purchased our first alpacas. The
purchase of our first llamas came three years later.
After being asked many times what the difference between
alpacas and llamas was, we decided to look at purchasing a
llama gelding so that we could show people, and also be able
to honestly answer their questions. We bought 5 female
llamas instead!
Our herds have grown and we now have over 200 alpacas
(both huacaya & suri), and over 20 llamas. Since then we
have been asked many times which we prefer – llamas or
alpacas. I can honestly say neither – we like them
both.
Llama trekking offers us a way to share our pleasure in both
groups of these wonderful animals, and to share the peace,
tranquillity and views of the rolling pastures of our South
Otago farm.
